The work then focuses on the period from the mid-19th century onwards - the Opium Trade and the unequal treaties, the admission of foreign ministers to Peking, the Taiping Rebellion and its aftermath, the opening of the Pacific, foreign territorial seizures in China, The Boxer Rebellion and a detailing of events from then on into the 1930s. The chapters on the Boxer Rebellion and Legation Quarter are of much interest and include a foldout map of the legation quarter of Peking.
