SITE UPDATED: 1 July 2010
NEW List 158
including many books on
Southeast Asia & its Art
and the usual Selection of Our Stock

Setting out the stall HANSHAN TANG BOOKS
is the West's foremost bookseller specializing in the Art of East Asia, South East Asia and Central Asia.

Our site is updated with a new set of records six times a year, roughly every two months, corresponding with the publication of our regular printed lists. From List 141 on, we added a note of each book's last appearance in a printed catalogue to our online records. (You will see a note of the form: "Was item XX in printed List XX.") You can now also search the site by item and list number. See the Search page for details.

For the special section of list 140, on Chinese Illustrated Books, we added the facility to view selected larger images for those books which are illustrated on the site. When you call up an appropriate record you will have the option of clicking the normal accompanying image and so display a larger version if one is available.

Available on the page where we provide downloadable pdf catalogues, you will find a twenty-page supplemental list with 921 further selected items from our stock that was issued in January with list 137. (This is still only a small protion of the ten thousand and more titles in our field that we have on hand at any one time. Remember to email us if you do not find what you are looking for on the site.)

In April 2005 we published our new catalogue of 976 books on CHINESE CERAMICS. The print version of this catalogue, number 31, is available on request. Please contact us if you would like to receive a copy. A downloadable, pdf version of the catalogue is also available. Finally, records for the books in the catalogue have now been added to this web site. Clicking the link above or selecting from the pop-up list brings up an index of all 976 books in the left-hand, index, frame (nb. this will take time to load).

John Cayley's review of the Colloquy organised in London by the Percival David Foundation, The Art of the Book in China, 13-15 June, 2005 is still available online here. It was written for the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association Newsletter no. 332, June/July 2005, pp. 1-3). The proceedings of the colloquy are now published and available for purchase from us.

In our area of expertise we stock antiquarian, new and secondhand books, and other documentation, in any language. Since we like to keep abreast of our field and because we are constantly buying high quality, scholarly libraries, we also have a strong stock of area and cultural studies titles for the region. We work mainly by mail order. You are welcome to our London offices, but are advised to make an appointment. We may not always be in, and we do warehouse some stock, so if there are things in which you are particularly interested, they may need to be fetched.

In 2000 we celebrated the appearance of our Catalogue 100 which included a special section (still accessible on the Web) entitled 'West meets East'. We also posted two memoirs of Hanshan Tang's early days by its founders. Please just click the link to read them.
